Matt Willis reveals wife Emma was ‘devastated’ by his ’embarrassing’ proposal after it was interrupted by a Busted fan – as TV host reveals she was NOT a fan of her husband’s band

Matt Willis has revealed his wife Emma was ‘devastated’ by his proposal after a disastrous dinner in Venice was interrupted by a Busted fan.

The 48-year-old TV presenter and the 41-year-old Busted singer started dating in 2004, when he was at the height of his fame with his band and she was presenting on MTV.

Emma and Matt have returned to the screens in a joint venture as the presenters of Love Is Blind UK – and appeared in Monday’s episode of Jamie Laing and Sophie Habboo’s Podcast by NewlyWeds.

During the podcast, Matt revealed how he proposed to her – and that he planned to do so in Italy to avoid being surrounded by English gamblers, or more specifically, Busted fans.

Emma also revealed that despite being married to one of the three band members, she was not a fan of Busted, but her husband’s talent convinced her.

The couple, who have three children, met while filming the MTV show Total Request Live, in which a fan got to marry a Busted member – and Emma was the bridesmaid.

But it was Matt and Emma who later hit it off and after two years of dating, the singer took her to Venice to propose.

The proposal didn’t go exactly to plan, however, as Matt said: ‘When I proposed, she was devastated. Deadly. Embarrassed, embarrassed, so embarrassed that we took her to Venice for a birthday.

‘I had organised this restaurant, which is really nice, and I was going to propose at the table in front of everyone. It’s in Venice. No one is going to be English. You sit down and there’s a table full of English people. I hear someone singing a broken song at one point and I think, Oh, this is going terribly wrong.

‘So then we had to walk around Venice like we could propose somewhere. And that’s not my thing. I don’t know where I’m going.’

Emma said that the chaos of the evening had left her feeling like he was acting strangely. She didn’t know if he would propose or break up with her.

“And I thought, this is really fucked up, if he brought me here to break up with me, you know what I mean,” she said. “I thought shit. And I thought either he’s not that kind of person, so please God no, or he’s going to fucking propose to me.”

Matt had unconsciously walked to the famous Rialto Bridge and decided that was where he would pop the question.

Emma said: ‘So we walked up to the top, and he just got, like, serious, and I was like, Oh, what are you doing? I grabbed this box and he started falling, and I just grabbed him around the neck. I said, Don’t you f***ing dare. Don’t you f***ing dare.

“I think I said, go over there. Because I thought, oh, there’s a bunch of people around us and they’re all going to look at us and go, oh my God, how embarrassing. But not like, oh, don’t propose. Just like, oh, how humiliatingly embarrassing.”

The former Big Brother presenter also admitted she wasn’t always a huge fan of her husband’s band.

“When I met him, I wasn’t really into it, but when I got to know him, I saw him in action,” she said.

‘It, I mean, he was just really, really good. And now those songs that I want, those songs that were such an integral part of the beginning of our relationship, because they were huge.

“Every time I hear them I get such great memories of them. I know every word and I’m now a huge, disappointed fan.”

In the spirit of modern relationships, Matt and Emma admitted that they’ve started couples therapy, and they’ve loved it.

Emma said: ‘That was a big change for us, actually, really, and we didn’t go, we didn’t go because we were in trouble, and we didn’t go because we thought shit this is a sinking ship. We thought sh** there’s a couple of sticking points here where we can’t see each other’s points of view. So let’s get a third party involved to try and figure out why we can’t see where the other is going.

‘And it was, you know, one, one or the other thing, right? And you sit down, and you just think, F***, this is brilliant, yeah?’

Speaking with Women’s Health UK Earlier this month, Emma revealed that if they had appeared on the show together, she would have fallen for Matt without ever seeing him.

She describes why she first fell in love with her husband Emma, who shares children Isabelle (13), Ace (11) and Trixie (13), seven, with Matt. She describes him as ‘charismatic, funny and loving and a beautiful person on the inside’.

When asked how she would fare on the show, she said: ‘I’ve been asked this question a lot lately and my answer was very quick and clear: ‘Yes, I would’. He had to think about it for a moment, which worried him!’

“His personality just radiates off of him. So he would have definitely been at the top of my list… and then I saw him and he was absolutely fit.”

Twenty years later, Emma continues to insist that she falls more and more in love with him every day and that she still doesn’t find their relationship boring.

She said: ‘He’s home in every sense of the word. Wherever he is, that’s where I want to be because he’s just f***ing brilliant and he’s my best mate, which I think can sometimes get lost in relationships…

“I’m still in love with him, I still like him, he still makes me laugh and he still turns me on. It’s not just the moves I make. I know it sounds really f***ing cheesy but I honestly love him more every day… and we hate being apart more and more.

“It’s really weird. It’s just a feeling that I’m really f***ing happy about because we’ve been together for a long time and it’s still not boring.”

She explains why she’s so excited about her new job as a presenter on Love Island Blind: ‘You get the chance to talk to someone and feel the energy and the vibe of that person… and hopefully – after dating them day and night for so long – you meet them and you’re as happy with what you see as you are with what you learn.’
