What was set to be a nightmare turned into a dream result for Nottingham Forest goalkeeper Matt Turner – with one mistake leading to a goal conceded, but a save leading to a goal to put his side ahead over Manchester United.

After a long through ball was played over the top, Forest centre-back Moussa Niakhate played it back to Turner.

The keeper made an unforced error by playing a weak pass through the middle that was easily stolen by Alejandro Garnacho.

Garnacho found an open Marcus Rashford, who took the opportunity and slotted the ball home to level the score at 1-1.

But Turner did not shy away from the challenge and his subsequent heroics led to a stunning goal for Forest, giving them a famous victory at the City Ground.

Turner made a strong save from United's Christian Eriksen's rocket and the rebound was misplayed by Amad Diallo.

Back on the pitch, Forest found captain Ryan Yates finding former Manchester United winger Anthony Elanga in space.

The Swede played the ball across for an open Morgan Gibbs-White at the top of the penalty area, who touched the ball once and fired past a diving Andre Onana to give Forest the lead again at 2-1.

Deep into stoppage time, Turner was again called upon and released after Bruno Fernandes' shot took an awkward deflection before being punched over the crossbar by the American shot-stopper.

Turner and Forest held on for victory at home – their first ever home win over Man United in the Premier League – much to the delight of supporters who now see their team rise to 15th place.

Forest are one point ahead of Brentford and one point behind Fulham, having played one more game than both teams.

As far as United are concerned, the defeat was a setback in their hopes of climbing further up the table. They are now seventh, two points behind West Ham United, who have a game in hand.
