Australia fans have drowned their sorrows after losing the Matildas Women’s World Cup semi-final to England on Wednesday night.
Although Australia played bravely and fought hard, it wasn’t enough to take on the rampant Lionesses team who won 3-1 in a packed Stadium Australia in Sydney.
Ella Toone’s 36th-minute goal gave England a 1–0 half-time lead, but the Matildas came out energized after the break and Sam Kerr scored a superb equalizer in the 63rd minute.
The status quo didn’t last long though, as Lauren Hemp put the Lionesses ahead again eight minutes later, before Alessia Russo scored the win in the 86th minute with a goal.
Supporters gathered in pubs, clubs and fan sites across the country had hoped for the best, but England were always the favourites.
