The Matildas basked in their ‘easy’ World Cup victory over Canada on Monday, as new footage showed the side celebrating on their way back from Melbourne.

Tony Gustavsson’s side kept the campaign alive in Melbourne’s Rectangular Stadium with a resounding 4-0 victory over Olympic champions Canada, sending a strong message to the rest of the competition.

Hayley Raso, Mary Fowler and Steph Catley performed for the Aussies, giving superstar captain Sam Kerr much needed recovery time as she continues to tend to her calf injury.

With the weight of an expectant nation on their shoulders, it’s not surprising that the Tillies were in an exuberant mood following their victory, with the players doing a lap of honor to receive the support of Melbourne’s 27,706 fans.

And new footage shared on Twitter shows the squad singing their team anthem on their way back to their base camp in Queensland as they await confirmation from their round of 16 opponents.

Referring to the number of goals scored that night, the players were heard shouting, “Was it one?” No! Was it two? No! Was it three? No! Was it four? Yes! Was it easy? Yes!’

The team song is not unique to the Matildas and is routinely sung in changing rooms across Australia by victorious teams in various sports.

The Matildas have every reason to be in high spirits as momentum builds towards what could be a memorable tournament for the team, and the country has their full back.

About 2.3 million people tuned in to Channel 7’s coverage of the victory over Canada – nearly three times the viewership of the final day of the fifth Ashes Test broadcast by Channel 9.

When asked about Australia’s tournament goal, midfielder Kyra Cooney-Cross nonchalantly said, ‘To win the World Cup.

“That’s our main focus: winning the World Cup.

“But for now we’re taking it game by game.”

Winger Cortnee Vine added: “If we play the football we’ve been playing, we can go all out.”

“It was a mature performance. (Canada) had a lot of possession. They are an incredible team. They defend well, keep the ball, create chances.

“So the way we defended together, and the way we countered that, was mature.

“In the past, we let moments like this get the better of us. It shows that we have come a long way and that we are ready for a tournament like this.’
