Matildas star Michelle Heyman gets engaged to her girlfriend to cap off a stunning year for Aussie football’s comeback queen

Matildas star Michelle Heyman has confirmed her engagement to long-term partner Christine Aldridge.

It is the crowning achievement of a stunning 2024 for the 36-year-old veteran striker, who scored the winning goal for Australia against Zambia at the Paris Olympics.

Heyman was called up to Tony Gustavsson’s squad just before the season, after Sam Kerr suffered a cruciate ligament injury. She seized her chance in the qualifiers with both hands, scoring five goals in two games against Uzbekistan.

On Instagram Heyman recently shared a photo of herself kissing Aldridge’s cheek, showing off her sparkling ring.

Heyman captioned the photo with six numbers: ‘6/9/24.’

Matilda’s teammate Katrina Gorry was quick to pass on her best wishes, commenting: ‘Love love love. Congratulations my favourite people.’

Midfielder Chloe Logarzo posted: ‘Congratulations darlings.’

This comes as Heyman was on the verge of signing for West Ham in the Women’s Super League this season, but was only offered a short-term contract with the Hammers.

“The deal was until December and if I signed that deal the transfer window wouldn’t allow me to play in Australia,” she said. A-League.

‘So it was a big decision… if I signed the contract with West Ham, I wouldn’t be able to play football again until April, when the season is over.

‘For me, playing games is more important.’

The prolific striker, who has scored 110 goals in her domestic career, will once again play for her beloved Canberra United, with the women’s domestic league kicking off on November 1.

“I look forward to continuing my football career with Canberra United, a club close to my heart,” said Heyman, who also has 67 caps for the Matildas.

‘I’ve made many great memories at Canberra United and I’m looking forward to making many more with my teammates and the fans.

‘I feel really good, both physically and mentally, and I’m ready to go full throttle.’
