Matildas fans criticize the team for posting social media posts celebrating the Indigenous heritage of an Australian town – but others accuse them of being ‘triggered racists’

Matildas fans have clashed off the field, blowing up at each other over a simple social post recognizing Indigenous heritage.

The Matildas will play Sweden tonight in Brisbane for the bronze medal at the FIFA Women’s World Cup.

As the Matildas have done the entire tournament, special mention was made of the traditional owners of the land in the stadium they play in, this time Brisbane Stadium.

One of the tweets complaining about the post made by the Matildas prior to their clash with Sweden

“Today we play on Yuggera & Turrbal land,” the Matildas social media team posted.

“We recognize the Yuggera & Turrbal peoples as the first custodians of the land, sky and water where Brisbane Stadium stands today, and pay our respects to their Elders of the past, present and rise.

We also recognize all the great non-Indigenous Australians who have made Brisbane the beautiful place it is today. As Australians we are all stewards of the land, air and water.’

While most people took the message as a simple acknowledgment of Indigenous heritage, others took to social media outraged, calling the post “wake up” “virtue signalling.”

“I support the Matildas. I do not support this divisive waking politics that mocks Aboriginal people and only holds them back through the glorification of victimization,” one follower lamented under the post.

‘Guardians of the sky. We’ve lost the plot,” added another.

“Oh for God’s sake, stop this nonsense and just focus on the game,” another suggested.

“FFS, after this game, win or lose, I’ll be glad to see the back of the virtue signal,” another grumbled.

While most people have been content to ignore the trolls that have been following the Matildas social media throughout the tournament, backtrack a bit.

“Cue all the triggered racists,” Matildas fan posted with a laughing emoji.

“I like it when they all crawl out from under their rocks together and say stupid things. I get to crush (block) a lot of them at once,” another posted.

“So many snowflakes caused by using a traditional name, you love to see it,” added another.

The Matildas have started their third-place play-off against Sweden at Brisbane Stadium, with a historic bronze medal on the line.
