Matildas fans mock Australia rugby sevens star after Olympic Games taunt backfires following shock collapse in Paris: ‘How did that work out for you?’

  • Sevens star Charlotte Caslick is ridiculed by Matildas fans
  • She claimed the Matildas get too much public recognition
  • But the sevens failed spectacularly to win a medal in Paris

Matildas fans have chosen to rub salt in the wounds of the women’s rugby sevens team after their spectacular defeat in Paris.

The Australians suffered a double surprise at the Stade de France on Tuesday when defeats to Canada and the United States meant they missed out on a chance to leave Paris with an Olympic medal.

It was a huge setback for the women’s team, who were expected to at least reach the final of the tournament, having already overwhelmed their rivals before the semi-final against Canada.

Maddison Levi and her team-mates were inconsolable as the final whistle blew for both games. They burst into tears. It was a heartbreaking scene for their families and fans watching at home.

However, some Matildas fans have chosen not to express their sympathy for the rugby team after veteran player Charlotte Caslick sparked an altercation between the two teams before the Olympics began.

Caslick expressed her annoyance at the increased attention given to the football team, despite the fact that the team has received far fewer awards than the rugby team.

I don’t know if they [Matildas] “Will survive the group stage,” she told News Corp.

‘We [Sevens Rugby] have been at the top of our game for years and years, always up there… with podiums in all of our series. And we probably don’t get the recognition [we deserve].

‘So I think if we can perform at the Olympics in Paris we can really show Australia how great a team we are. There are superstars who deserve the praise that others [Matildas]to get.’

A fan asked Caslick on Twitter early Wednesday morning, “How’s that stage, honey?”

‘At least the Matildas are playing the full version of their sport.’

However, Tony Gustavsson’s team would have to return home from Paris too early as the Matildas face an uphill battle to qualify for the knockout stages.

They were beaten 3-0 in the first match against Germany, but won 6-5 against Zambia on Sunday.

The Matildas need a positive result against league leaders Team USA to have a chance of advancing.
