Mathematician reveals the formula for the perfect proposal – and claims you should spend 2.5 months’ salary on the ring
It’s the most romantic day of the year and many choose it as the perfect opportunity to pop the question.
But – as the cost of a restaurant meal rises – living rooms could become the focus of proposals across the country.
To help those nervously waiting for a “Yes,” experts have unveiled a formula for getting down on their knees at home.
Dr. Tom Crawford, a mathematician from the University of Oxford, believes his method can increase the chances of a Happy Ever After.
“If you follow this recipe for success, you’ll give yourself the best possible chance of getting that ‘yes,'” he said.

To help those nervously awaiting a “Yes,” experts have unveiled a formula for hunkering down at home
The formula, based on an Asda survey of 2,000 people, calculates a ‘suggestion score’ (S) out of 100, with 100 being as close to a ‘Yes’ as possible.
It is based on four key factors: the time of the meal (M), the timing of the proposal (T), the amount of planning (P), and the cost of the engagement ring (C).
A fifth bonus variable (B) is scored between -50 and 25 based on a series of events that might occur during a romantic evening at home.
Based on the survey responses, Dr. Crawford recommends starting the meal at 8:06 p.m., with the proposal taking place after the main course but before dessert.
The optimal amount to spend on an engagement ring is 2.5 months of your salary, and you should have planned the proposal for 68 days, he said.
People hoping to close the deal can increase their chances of success by giving a heartfelt speech (+8 bonus points), creating a romantic setting with mood lighting and flowers (+7 bonus points), and playing good music (+5 bonus points ) .

However, enamored Brits who want to seduce their partner should avoid checking their phone (-20 bonus points), having the TV on in the background (-14 bonus points), burning the food (-10 bonus points) and having children in the house to have. (-6 bonus points).
Dr. Crawford said, “To maximize your proposal score and achieve the perfect at-home proposal, focus on four key ingredients: the timing of the meal, the timing of the proposal, the amount of planning, and the cost of the proposal. the engagement ring.
‘Asda’s research suggests that starting the meal at 8.06pm is the best choice, with the proposal itself taking place after the main course but before dessert.
‘To make sure everything is perfect in the evening, you need 68 days to plan proposals, and ideally you would spend 2.5 months of your salary on the ring – although it was nice to see that more than a quarter of respondents wouldn’t care about the cost of a ring or would be happy with whatever their partner could afford.
“You also want to make sure the music is good, prepare only the best food, and give a heartfelt speech to really win your partner’s favor.”
“When it comes to things to avoid: keep those phones turned off and out of sight, drop the kids off with a sitter, and don’t burn the food!”
Asda has created Bistro Valentine’s Day dining options which they say can also increase the odds by 5 points.
They recommend Bistro Sirloin Steak with Garlic and Herb Heart Butters and Parmesan Fries for the main course, and Bistro Chocolate and Salted Caramel Cheesecake Slices for dessert.
Asda is offering a £100 voucher to all smitten shoppers who can prove they’ve gotten a ‘Yes’ from their partner by following Dr.’s perfect proposal formula this Valentine’s Day. Crawford to use.
To claim the voucher, shoppers must submit and redeem the Asda receipt for their Valentine’s Day dinner offer, along with a time stamp of when they completed the deal.
The retailer is also launching its £1 engagement ring, which sent shoppers into a frenzy in 2023.
