MasterChef’s John Torode is ‘nearly poisoned’ when a contestant accidentally swaps sugar for salt in a devastating mix up

MasterChef’s John Torode was ‘almost poisoned’ when a contestant accidentally swapped sugar for salt in episode two of the hit cooking show.

Scottish hopeful Peter was left sad when, instead of caramelising his carrots, he covered them in salt.

Judge John made a comical face of sadness after tasting the vegetable and then said, “Whoa. What is the sour heat of the roots?’

A confused Peter, 49, replied: “Um, there wasn’t one. That was just butter and sugar.”

Breaking the news to the IT consultant, John revealed: ‘I think you may have mistaken the sugar for salt.’

John made a comical face of sadness after tasting the vegetable and then said, “Wow. What is the sour heat of the roots?’

Co-host Gregg Wallace, who tried the carrots despite John’s reaction, confirmed, “Yes, you have.”

Peter rolled his eyes in disbelief and John added, “The fish is actually quite nicely cooked. ‘

Gregg, 49, added salt to his wound with another criticism: “That sauce doesn’t work. It is way too sour and has a lot of chili peppers in it. It’s too loud.’

Afterwards, in the confessional, Peter admitted, “The nerves really got the better of me with that dish there.”

‘They say it’s not over until the fat lady sings, but I hear her in the distance.

It comes after Peter’s Heat 1 contestant Jerome put vinegar in his dessert but still progressed to the next stage.

When Peter was sent home, he said: ‘I’m disappointed that I can’t hide that. I almost poisoned John and Gregg with salt instead of sugar.”

Before appearing, Peter revealed why he signed up for the programme.

He said: ‘After years of watching MasterChef and developing my cooking skills, I always thought about entering the competition but never had the courage.

‘After I posted some of my dishes online, friends and family commented on how good they looked, and one day out of the blue an old friend sent me a message with the link to the MasterChef 2024 applications, and the rest is history.

He added: “My earliest cooking memory is learning to make lasagna and various Italian dishes with my father. I’m not sure if there was a recipe he followed, but it tasted great!

‘Growing up, my family weren’t big foodies, but the food we ate was comforting, things like mince and tatties, or stew, and every now and then a recipe would be jotted down from a cooking show and then tried out in the kitchen, what It was a treat.’

MasterChef is airing its twentieth series and the judges have hinted that this anniversary will see the toughest culinary tests yet.

John revealed, “Michel (Roux Jr.) allowed our participants to do a service at Le Gavroche before that historic restaurant closed. It’s an incredible thing to say.’

Gregg added: “We’re putting the chefs through the most extraordinary challenges we’ve ever seen.”

And the judging duo have no plans to stop despite reaching the anniversary milestone, saying: ‘It’s been a great year, but there will be many, many more great years to come.’

Three episodes of MasterChef are released every Monday on BBC iPlayer and broadcast every Monday, Wednesday and Friday on BBC One, for a total of eight weeks.
