Poh Ling Yeow has revealed that he once shocked a fan by admitting that he cooks “very basic” meals at home in contrast to the elaborate dishes he prepares on TV.

The MasterChef Australia star, 49, told Samantha Armytage on her podcast that many professional chefs only prepare elaborate dishes when they have an audience.

‘Someone asked me if I cook fancy food at home and I said ‘heck no’. I only cook that kind of thing when I’m showing off,’ she admitted.

She added: ‘I cook very Australian dishes at home. Very basic. It demystifies everything professional chefs do at home.

The Malaysian-born reality star explained that since cooking is what she does for a living, she likes to eat ‘clean’ when she’s not working.

Poh went on to say that she wished simple food would be more accepted at social events, as the focus should be on “reconnecting” rather than eating.

It comes after Poh recently wrote a cookbook called What I Cook When No One Is Looking.

In the book, Poh shares his ‘simple’ secret recipes for easy-to-make meals that are absolutely delicious.

She recently spoke candidly about leaving the Mormon church and experiencing a ‘turbulent’ marriage with her first husband.

'Someone asked me if I cook home-cooked meals and I was like "hell no".  I only cook that kind of stuff when I'm showing off,' she admitted.

Before her appearance on Australian Story, she told ABC that her relationship with Matt Phipps was “fierce” from the start and the pair got into wild shouting matches.

“Matt and I absolutely murdered each other,” she said of her ex-spouse, whom she married in 1990 and divorced in 1999.

The reality star also credited the fact that she and Matt were childless as a reason it was so easy to end their relationship in a “clean and grown-up” way.

Poh became a household name after appearing on the first season of MasterChef in 2009, before returning for season 12, where he was ranked sixth.
