MasterChef Australia star Julie Goodwin breaks down as she recalls the harrowing moment she thought about ending her life – and how a young couple saved her

Julie Goodwin opened up about a disturbing chapter in her life during an interview on The Project on Sunday.

The 53-year-old MasterChef Australia star has just released her autobiography, Your Time Starts Now, which details how she was sexually abused as a child and later attempted suicide as a teenager.

The TV chef, who shot to fame with her winning performance on MasterChef in 2009, also struggled with suicidal thoughts a few years ago.

Speaking to host Hamish Macdonald, 42, at the time, Goodwin tearfully recounted a harrowing moment when she was about to go for a swim, unsure whether she would return.

Goodwin emotionally described how a pair of shoes her son bought her served as a reminder of the immense pain her loved ones would endure.

“I just couldn’t figure out what to do with this pair of shoes and what would be the least painful for me to do with these shoes,” she recalled.

A young couple passing by stopped for a moment and sat down with the beloved chef, making her realize the urgency of seeking professional help.

Julie recalled being in a mental health facility for five weeks in February 2020.

“It took me a while and quite a bit of calm to realize that basically everyone there is exactly the same as me, just regular people struggling with different things,” she said.

“I learned a lot about humanity,” she added.

The beloved TV star claims her husband Mick and family helped her on the road to recovery and gave her the love and support she needed, and now says she is grateful for her life.

“I’m so much better, I’ve changed my whole life to get better,” Goodwin revealed.
