Massive Diablo 4 leak gives us our best look at the game yet

>

More than 40 minutes of Diablo 4 test footage has leaked online, giving us our most comprehensive look at the upcoming action RPG yet.

Taken from what appears to be a private Diablo 4 test build, the footage was shared on social media. It includes two videos that together last 43 minutes. Unlike the recent series of leaks surrounding GTA 6, the footage is watermarked, indicating it’s from a private test and likely identifying the leaker behind the footage.

Blizzard has not confirmed that the leak is real, but the images resemble other Diablo 4 previews we’ve seen in the past. It depicts a Barbarian character running through a dungeon, fighting a variety of demonic enemies and exploring an open overworld.

Diablo as you know it

The images show exactly what you’d expect from a current-generation Diablo game. It follows the familiar gameplay loop of exploring dungeons, fighting demons and picking up loot as damage counters shoot out of enemies’ heads and the player manages his inventory.

It also looks quite dark and atmospheric. The Barbarian class has many attacks to choose from and the game’s UI is minimal. We even get a brief look at the character’s skill tree and world map.

The images are clearly from an early version of the game. Many buildings are missing their textures, a few icons have yet to be placed and some sound effects are missing. A short feedback survey even pops up halfway through the 38-minute video, asking the player for their opinion of the game in its current state. With Diablo 4 slated to release next year, expect a lot more work and changes to be made before we get our hands on it.

Player response has been largely positive, with fans praising the leak’s gritty visuals and heavy fighting. That’s reassuring after a Diablo 4 leak last month revealed that a controversial Diablo 3 feature is making a comeback. At least we know that the upcoming RPG won’t replicate Diablo Immortal’s much-criticized microtransactions.

It may not be long before you can catch a glimpse of the game. Shortly after the leaked images appeared, Blizzard announced a closed beta test for Diablo 4, inviting community members to try out the end-game content. It will be the game’s first closed beta after an alpha test for friends and family went live last month.

In a blog post (opens in new tab)Blizzard said it will invite a “limited number of Diablo players who have recently spent significant time playing the endgame experiences of Diablo 2: Resurrected, Diablo 3, and Diablo Immortal”.

They can try the game on Xbox Series X|S, Xbox One, PS5 and PS4. If you think you’ve met the requirements, make sure you’ve signed up for the “News & Specials” section of the “Privacy & Communications” menu in the Battle.net Launcher to secure your seat.
