Manchester United fears Mason Mount will be out longer than initially expected due to the hamstring injury he sustained against Tottenham.

Initial tests showed Chelsea’s £55 million signing would take place three weeks later and be back just after the international break.

However, there are concerns he will be out for up to six weeks, causing him to miss the visit to Brighton after the international break and possibly United’s first group game in the Champions League and the next two games against Nottingham Forest and Arsenal.

United are looking for a new midfielder, but this may underline the need to keep Scott McTominay as cover.

The Scottish international, who played a friendly defeat against Burnley behind closed doors on Wednesday, has interest from other Premier League clubs.

The Ten Hag team has made an unconvincing start to the season and hopes for a rapid improvement in performance.

They were lucky enough to win their first game of the season 1–0 against Wolves, who were controversially denied a late penalty.

United then found themselves out against Spurs as they were beaten 2–0 thanks to a Pepe Matar Sarr forward and a Lisandro Martinez own goal.

The manager remained positive about his side despite the result, saying: “The performance in the first half (was) very good, but you have to understand that you have to score a goal,” he stressed.

“Because of the significance of the first goal, players must take responsibility. Focus, passion and desire right now to keep the overview and score the first goal.

“It’s about faith and we believe these players because of last year. They can score goals.’

United will then play against Nottingham Forest on Saturday.
