Mason Greenwood scored Getafe’s second goal in the home match against Las Palmas on Saturday evening by going around the goalkeeper and into an empty net.

The attacker, on loan from Manchester United, was able to take advantage of Diego Rico’s long pass and score past Alvaro Valles after 14 minutes.

While Getafe led 2-0 and led 3-1 at half-time, two goals from the visitors in the second half ensured that the match ended completely in the balance.

Jaime Mata had put Getafe ahead for three minutes before Greenwood’s goal gave the hosts a two-goal cushion at the Colosseum.

Sandro pulled one goal back for the visitors ten minutes before half-time, but Nemanja Maksimovic was able to restore Getafe’s lead before half-time.

Las Palmas defender Sergi Cardona reduced the deficit for the visitors five minutes into the second half, before midfielder Munir leveled the score in the 57th minute.

After six goals in the first hour, there were no more breakthroughs for either team and the match ended 3-3.

Manchester United fans were quick to comment on Greenwood’s goal, especially as their own front line failed at times, especially Antony.

A third believed the Brazilian was ‘the kind of brother who would try to intervene in this particular situation’, rather than operating as clinically as Greenwood did.

“This is who we need to replace Antony,” said another. ‘But my club will waste millions.’

Despite ultimately winning the match against Luton Town 2-1, the Man United striker missed several chances similar to those Greenwood scored at the Coliseum, and fans were quick to point this out.

One wrote: ‘This is the same chance that Bruno (Fernandes) and (Alejandro) Garnacho got against Luton ??’, while another said: ‘Two of our players missed this in one match’.

In September 2023, after Manchester United officials decided that Greenwood’s immediate future lay elsewhere, he was able to secure a move to Getafe.

He has proven to be useful for his loan club, with the goal against Las Palmas his eighth goal since joining the club.

After his partial takeover from Man United was confirmed, Sir Jim Ratcliffe appeared to suggest the club could bring him back, with the 22-year-old contracted until 2025.

However, it led to claims that Greenwood has no desire to return to Manchester United as he felt the club did not support him in the right way.
