Maryborough crash: Student, nurse, church pastor killed in horror smash as boy, 13, is charged

The name of the three young women who died in a horror car crash, allegedly caused by a 13-year-old boy in a stolen Mercedes.

The alleged stolen vehicle collided with a Holden killing Kelsie Davies, 17, and church pastor Michale Chandler, 29, at about 10:45pm Sunday in Maryborough, 150 miles north of Brisbane.

The force of the crash also shunted the vehicle into a Mazda, killing the driver, nurse Sheree Robertson, 52, who was driving home after work.

A 23-year-old passenger in the Holden has been airlifted to hospital in Brisbane for treatment.

The boy who allegedly drove the Mercedes was taken to hospital but has since been released into police custody and charged with three counts of dangerous use of a motor vehicle resulting in death and one count of unlawful use of a motor vehicle.

The police are investigating whether there was another passenger in the vehicle with the suspect after reports of a person running away at the scene.

Kelsie Davies, 17, was killed in the Queensland town of Maryborough on Sunday night when a Mercedes, reportedly driven by a 13-year-old boy, collided with the Holden she was driving.

Keslie Davies graduated from Maryborough’s Riverside Christian College last year

Teachers at Maryborough’s Riverside Christian College, where Ms Davies graduated last year, are shocked by the tragedy.

One of her teachers was Labor MP for Bundaberg Tom Smith who took classes until joining the Queensland Parliament in 2020.

“Kelsie was a student that every teacher wishes they could teach,” Mr. Smith recalled The courier mail.

“She was always eager to learn, eager to set the bar high, and above all, was just a really nice and gentle kid who was loved by all her peers.

“It’s very hard on a day like today to put into words all the words that truly represent why Kelsie will be so missed, but I know her cohort of friends from the Riverside class who graduated last year will be hurt and their grief will share for someone so important to them.

“Like many, we will remember her family and friends today, and the families of those who died last night.”

Police said Ms Robertson was driving her Mazda home after work when she was killed in the accident.

Nurses and paramedics arrived at the scene of the crash to be confronted with the sight of their seriously injured colleague at Maryborough Hospital, who died at the scene despite their desperate efforts.

The Wide Bay Health and Hospital Service released a statement on Monday honoring their colleague.

“The Wide Bay HHS team was absolutely devastated when they learned of the death of a respected Maryborough Hospital staff member in a tragic road accident over the weekend,” the statement said.

“Our thoughts are with the victims, their families and loved ones, as well as the aid workers who have been affected.”

A friend of Ms Robertson’s, who declined to be named, said she was a “very cool, very loud, very outgoing nurse.”

“She was a great teacher and I learned so much from her,” she said.

“We will feel her loss for a very, very long time.”

Ms. Chandler’s husband, Matthew, paid tribute to her on Facebook.

“It is with the greatest of heavy hearts that we bid farewell to our dear Michale Chandler for the time being,” he wrote.

You were and will always be the best wife and mother in the world.

“Until we meet in heaven, my queen, love you to the moon and back.”

The couple had previously celebrated a year as licensed ministers at Maryborough’s Reach Church in April.

The Mercedes involved in the crash was reported stolen from a home in Maryborough at 8:40pm Sunday, but police were not pursuing the vehicle when the accident occurred.

The alleged driver is ‘known to the police’ but was not on police bail at the time and a spokesman was not aware of any Community warrant against the boy.

The 13-year-old will appear before Maroochydore Children’s Court at a later date.

Anyone who witnessed the accident or has dashcam footage is asked to contact local police.
