Marvin Humes paid tribute to Liam Payne and offered his condolences to his former One Direction bandmates.
The singer fell from the third floor of the CasaSur Palermo Hotel in Buenos Aires on Wednesday evening shortly after 5pm after flying out to see Niall Horan perform.
The DJ, 39, spoke to listeners on Kiss Radio to share some personal anecdotes about his friendship with the late singer.
The former JLS singer told fans he first met Liam in 2008, when he was just 14 years old, and revealed the news of his tragic death was ‘devastating’.
He said: ‘You probably know the very sad news that broke out last night when One Direction’s Liam Payne passed away.

Marvin said: “I’m personally devastated. I first met Liam when he was 14 years old as JLS when he auditioned for the X Factor and we immediately hit it off and took him under our wing.” (JLS pictured in 2008)

‘Unfortunately it didn’t work out for him that year and I remember putting my arm around him and saying, ‘You’re so talented mate, you’re only 14 years old, it’ll work out, just come back and try.’ again”.
‘And that’s what he did. He auditioned again for two years and then One Direction was born and the rest is history.
“They went on to become one of the biggest bands of all time and I’m super proud of what he’s achieved and what the boys have achieved.
‘Really shocking news. My thoughts and condolences go out to Liam’s family, their friends, to Cheryl and his son Bear, and to his One Direction bandmates.
“They also lost a brother, so I take comfort in the fact that Liam has truly achieved his dreams – beyond his wildest dreams, and had an incredible career, and I’m super proud of him for that.”
Liam died immediately from multiple injuries after plunging to his death from a third-floor hotel balcony and fracturing his skull, with emergency services unable to save him at the scene.
He told listeners: ‘Really shocking news. My thoughts and condolences go out to Liam’s family, their friends, to Cheryl and Bear, his son, and to his One Direction bandmates.”

Following the band’s joint statement, the singer took to Instagram to share his own emotional message with his friend, who he described as “warm, supportive and incredibly loving.”

While in Argentina, Liam was reunited with his former bandmate Niall when he went to watch his concert earlier this month.
His identity was confirmed by emergency services by checking his passport, but police do not yet have conclusive evidence about the circumstances of his fall.
Alberto Crescenti, spokesman for a city ambulance service, stated that Liam had fallen 40 meters and suffered “serious injuries incompatible with life.”
