Marvel’s Avengers is shutting down – so grab these freebies while you can

Crystal Dynamics, the developer behind Marvel’s Avengers, has announced that it will end official support for the superhero fighter later this year. But before support ends, the developer is treating players to a ton of in-game freebies.
In a blog post (opens in new tab), the development team explained that it will be rolling out the final balance patches for Marvel’s Avengers in update 2.8, due out March 31, with development officially ending on September 30. Heroes, we will no longer be adding any new content or features to Marvel’s Avengers,” said Crystal Dynamics. However, even after official support ends, “both single-player and multiplayer gameplay will continue to be available”.
The end of development also means the end of the Marvel Avengers Marketplace. After update 2.8 launches, you will no longer be able to purchase credits and Crystal Dynamics will convert any remaining currency into in-game resources. However, you can get some seriously ill freebies.
What’s left?
As a token of appreciation to the Marvel’s Avengers community, Crystal Dynamics will be gifting any remaining cosmetic content available for free to fans still playing the game. This means every name tag, emote, outfit, and takedown will be yours at no extra cost from March 31st.
“Donating Marketplace’s entire library of cosmetic content is a way of saying thank you to our community by allowing everyone to experience the breadth and depth of content in Marvel’s Avengers,” the development team said in the blog post.
There is also good news for those who still want to earn cosmetic awards, as the cosmetics seller will still be in working order after development ends. Therefore, you can still earn skins by completing challenges.
Abandoned
Unfortunately, it’s not all good news for fans of the heroic online game. For those hoping to get some cash back on their soon-to-be-unusable credits, you’ll be disappointed to discover that’s not an option. The refund policy will not change and Crystal Dynamics will not apply any special surcharges.
The issue of refunds also raises the question of how to close a game and make sure everyone is happy. Making all cosmetics free is a great way to reward loyal customers, but I’ve seen some players share their displeasure (opens in new tab) to spend real money on cosmetics only to give them away for free.
Unfortunately, there’s no way to end support for a game and keep everyone happy. There will always be people who spend more time on a game than others, so in the end it may seem unfair to give everything away equally. However, the developers behind Marvel’s Avengers could have walked away without giving their fans anything. So I think the free cosmetics are a great way to celebrate this heroic game and all it has accomplished.
