Arsenal legend Martin Keown believes The Gunners are “driving on confidence after a brilliant start to the season with them at the top of the Premier League table.”

The North London team are one of the best in Europe and are in excellent form, beating Liverpool 3-2 in a statement win on Sunday, and Keown described the mood around the club as ‘an elixir of sorts’.

He also noted that while the club would like to be in the Champions League already, the Europa League allows them to give certain players ‘vital minutes’.

Keown told BT Sport: “It definitely feels like there are quality players out there at the moment and there’s something about what’s going on around Arsenal – sort of an elixir. They all run on trust.

“It’s just great to see and you’re going to need those players all season. It’s going to be you know, okay, it’s all going really well now, but you need quality and really (the Europa League) is a breeding ground.

“This competition is perfect, ready-made the Europa League. We can put people in – (Takehiro) Tomiyasu got crucial minutes the week before playing a man marking a job against (Mohamed) Salah.

“So it works really well for them. If they’re already in the Champions League, which of course you’d like to be, you really would be, you wouldn’t be able to play as many players in the squad as you are now.”

The Gunners have surprised many by taking an early lead in the league after dropping points against Manchester United so far this season.

Mikel Arteta has used Thursday night’s European clashes to spread the workload across his team and ensure all players have minutes under their belts so they are ready to impress when called up.

But there was a noticeable improvement from the end of last season when Arteta’s side managed to miss Champions League qualifiers after a derby defeat in north London against Tottenham.

And according to data from the website FiveThirtyEight, Arsenal are likely to finish second in the league and have a 14 percent chance of winning the title, while Mikel Arteta’s team is 75 percent likely to qualify for the Champions League.

While Arsenal are currently on top by one point, City are expected to finish first – a proposition no one is likely to dispute, such has been Erling Haaland’s start to the season.
