Maria Thattil praises Neighbours for casting ‘a queer actor of colour’ ahead of her soap acting debut… amid high-profile relationship with AFLW star Moana Hope
Model, podcaster and author Maria Thattil has recently forayed into acting, landing a role in upcoming episodes of Neighbours.
Speaking exclusively to the Ny Breaking, Maria, 30, praised the Aussie soap for casting a ‘queer actor of colour’.
‘I think it’s great that we live in a time where casting directors want to do this in an authentic way. So they select queer actors of color for queer characters of color,” she said.
Maria, who will play Amira Devkar on the show, said she is keen to help make the show more authentically representative as she grew up not seeing people like herself on the classic television show.
“It felt distant to me because you look at these families and these stories, and I think if you don’t see yourself in these great Australian stories, does that mean you don’t fit in with what Australian stories are meant to be? I’m so excited to be a part of it,” said the rising actress.
