Ryan explained, “She left a pink gift with a pink bow every day, from Barbie to Ken, while we were filming. They were all beach related.

“Like puka shells, or a sign that says ‘Pray for Branding.’ Because Ken’s job is just beach. I never quite figured out what that means. But I felt like she was trying to help Ken understand, through these gifts she gave.”

As for how Margot took on the role of Barbie, she revealed that her goal was to change the perception of the controversial doll to those who “actively hate” the brand.

She explained, “Obviously we want to honor the 60-year legacy of this brand, but we have to recognize that there are a lot of people who aren’t fans of Barbie.

And in fact, are not just indifferent to Barbie. They actively hate Barbie. And have a real problem with Barbie. We need to find a way to acknowledge that.’

She addressed the “sexualization” of Barbie, reasoning, “I’m like, ‘Okay, she’s a doll. She’s a plastic doll. She doesn’t have organs. If she doesn’t have organs, she doesn’t have reproductive organs.’ organs. If she has no reproductive organs, would she feel sexual desire? No, I don’t think she could.”

“She’s sexualized. But she should never be sexy. People can project sex onto her. Yes, she can wear a short skirt, but because it’s fun and pink. Not because she wanted you to see her ass.”

The Barbie movie was first conceived in 2016, with Amy Schumer originally being brought in to play the titular role and co-write the screenplay with her sister Kim Caramele.

A year later, Amy left the project citing “creative differences,” leaving Greta Gerwig and Noah Baumbach to write the screenplay and Margot to take the role.

Recalling her initial reaction to the script, Margot confessed that she and husband Tom Ackerley had doubts that the film would ever get made.

She explained, “We just looked at each other, pure panic on our faces. We were like, Holy fucking s**t.

“I think the first thing I said to Tom was, ‘This is so genius. It’s such a shame we’ll never be able to make this movie.'”

Margot also revealed the advice director and writer Greta gave her to get into her character by listening to an episode of This American Life

She explained, “I was like, Greta, I have to do this whole character journey.

“And Greta was like, ‘Oh, I got you a really good podcast. You know how you have a voice in your head all the time? This woman, she doesn’t have that voice in her head.'”

The cast is a who’s who of Hollywood powerhouses, with Will Ferrell as Mattel’s CEO and Helen Mirren as the narrator.

Marvel star Simu Liu, Issa Rae, Michael Cera and Kate McKinnon star as residents of Barbieland, while Rhea Perlman, America Ferrera and Alexandra Shipp are also attached to the film.

Dua Lipa, who also plays one of the Barbies, will release a hit song written especially for the film, MailOnline revealed.

Photos from the film’s set have been whetting fans’ appetites for over a year now, and viewers once again got an official glimpse of what to expect in a new trailer.

After a first teaser that paid homage to Stanley Kubrick’s 2001: A Space Odyssey, fans now have a real sense of the dazzling world of “Barbieland.”

In what appears to be a fish-out-of-water comedy, we see Margot’s Barbie having fun with Ryan’s Ken in a hyper-realistic Barbie-inspired world – dubbed ‘Barbieland’ – where there are many iterations of the iconic dolls out there. to exist .

Playing on the quirky premise of what the Mattel dolls would do if left to their own devices, the teaser features a comedic scene between Ryan and Margot about spending the night together.

“I thought I’d stay tonight,” Ryan’s Ken asks Margot’s Barbie. ‘To do something?’ she replies innocently.

After a short awkward pause, he replies, “I’m not really sure.”

However, their plastic-fantastic lives are (quite literally) turned upside down when they are seen traveling to the “real world” in a car that shoots into the sky.

Will Ferrell also plays the CEO of the toy company as he somehow brings his figures to life and welcomes them to civilization.

The film is based on Mattel’s fashion doll line, which CEO Mattell Ynon Kreiz said the company expected the Barbie product to continue to grow, adding, “We couldn’t be more excited about Barbie’s long-term prospects.” ‘

One to watch: Margot stars alongside Ryan as Ken Doll, while Emma Mackey, Simi Lui and Kingsley Ben-Adir also appear in the film as various Barbies and Kens

The Barbie brand generated over £1 billion in gross sales last year and the doll turned 64 this week, first debuting with the original on March 9, 1959.

She previously talked about turning the iconic Barbie doll into a movie, but she told British Vogue in 2021, “There’s a lot of baggage involved!”

And a lot of nostalgic connections. But with that comes a lot of exciting ways to attack it.”

“People generally hear ‘Barbie’ and think, ‘I know what that movie is going to be,’ and then they hear that Greta Gerwig is writing and directing it, and they say, ‘Oh, well, maybe I don’t know.’T …”‘
