Maren Morris talked about her decision to leave country music behind during an interview The New York Times Popcast Podcastwhich was released on Wednesday.

The 33-year-old singer initially announced that she had chosen to stop writing within her old genre last September, which led to both positive and negative reactions from her fans.

The performer, who recently appeared to criticize Jason Aldean’s controversial song Try That In A Small Town, has since expanded on her choice to quit producing country music, saying, “I couldn’t do this circus anymore.”

Morris began by explaining that she had changed her perspective on the issues surrounding the genre in recent years.

She said she was tired of “feeling like I have to absorb and explain people’s bad behavior and laugh it off.”

The hitmaker added: “I just couldn’t do that after 2020. I changed. A lot changed about me that year.’

The Grammy Award-winning artist also said that the decision to leave the country behind was extremely difficult, even though she felt like she had no other choice.

“I don’t want to say goodbye, but I really can’t participate in the truly toxic arms of this institution anymore,” she said.

Morris then recalled that she was initially urged to quit producing country music after receiving a particularly hostile response to her 2016 songs My Church and ’80s Mercedes.

She said, “Ironically, it was like, ‘She’s not country. Look at the way she dresses. Get out of here. You don’t belong here. This isn’t like Dolly (Parton).”

The singer then talked about how she was impressed by the diversity of the audience at her first major show in New York City.

‘It felt so diverse, accepting and loving. And I just wanted to continue that and strengthen it every time through my work,” she said.

Morris first announced that she had chosen to retire from producing country music during an interview with the Los Angeles Times which was shared last month.

The artist stated that she wanted to “burn (country) to the ground and start over,” although she described the genre as “burning itself to the ground without my help.”

The artist’s jump from country to pop was also marked by a move to Columbia Records from the company’s Nashville division.

Morris was also involved in a feud with Aldean’s wife Brittany over rights for transgender children, which also influenced her decision to work in other musical styles.

The artist told the Los Angeles Times that she wanted to advance her original genre in terms of acceptance and tolerance for all individuals.

‘If you really like this kind of music and you see problems arising, then criticism is necessary. Everything that is so popular needs to be scrutinized if we want to see progress,” she said.
