Marcus Mumford has revealed that he has hired a trauma specialist to review his new music, fearing he would trigger listeners by the raw lyrics.
The Mumford & Sons frontman, 35, has previously shared that he has been sexually abused – and candid about the traumatic ordeal through his debut solo album, Self-Titled.
Opening up about the process of writing such an honest album, the musician also recalled “bursting into tears” during the recording of the song Cannibal – which describes the sexual abuse he suffered through a series of hard hitting lyrics.
‘I didn’t mean to trigger anyone’: Marcus Mumford, 35, has revealed he’s hired a truama specialist to check his new music…
During a recent conversation with the guardMarcus spoke candidly about the process of making the album and his reasons behind it.
The singer admitted he was careful about properly presenting Cannibal’s lyrics to listeners, saying a trauma specialist had checked them before it was released.
“I didn’t just want to put up traumatic stuff and activate or trigger people,” Marcus explains, admitting he also “broken down in tears” while recording the song.
Cannibal portrays the singer’s childhood trauma through anger and emotion – including lines like ‘you f***ing animal’.
Cautious: ‘I didn’t just want to put up traumatic stuff and activate or trigger people,’ explains Marcus – admitting he also ‘broken down in tears’ while recording the song
Despite the extremely personal lyrics, Marcus explained that it “felt like a natural and useful part of my process” to release them to the world.
The singer has previously said that talking about the abuse had helped relieve years of shame, repeating this as he continued: “I was less overwhelmed with shame. Taking these intimate indulgences, these private moments and publicizing them as widely as possible – it’s just crazy to do.
“But there’s magic in it, I think, because you give people the opportunity to connect with it,” he said.
Marcus’ distraught mother, Eleanor, only learned of the abuse 30 years later when he listened to the lyrics of his new album.
Speak with GQ Magazine about the abuse last month, he recalled playing Cannibal for his mother, who returned to him two days later to ask what the song was about.

Eleanor was shocked to reveal that he had been abused, while Marcus reflected on the trauma his mother must have endured when he learned about the abuse through the f***ing hilarious medium of vocals.
He first opened up about the abuse and continued: ‘Like a lot of people – and I’m learning more and more about this as I play it against people – I was sexually abused as a child.
“Not by family and not in church, as some may think. But I hadn’t told anyone about it for 30 years.
Critically acclaimed: Marcus, who has played in the folk rock band with Ben Lovett and Ted Dwane since 2007, confirmed the band will continue as a trio after banjoist Winston Marshall (left) left the group in June 2021

Marcus’ parents John and Eleanor were international leaders of the neocharismatic evangelical Christian denomination, the Vineyard Churches.
He added: “And for some reason, and I can’t really understand why, I didn’t become a sexual abuser even though I did my share of c**tish behavior.”
Marcus, who shares two children with his wife Carey Mulligan, explained how he was “at rock bottom” after he finished touring Mumford & Sons’ 2018 album Delta, with his loved ones acknowledging that he was not acting right and urged him to seek help.
Despite the release of his solo album, Marcus remains a part of Mumford & Sons – and he hopes the band will get back together next year.
