Tight end Marcedes Lewis is playing his 18th season as a member of the Chicago Bears and agrees to a one-year contract on Friday.

Lewis, 39, was a first pick in 2006 and spent the past five seasons with the Green Bay Packers after 12 years in Jacksonville.

By playing in Year 18, Lewis becomes the only tight end in NFL history to play after a 17th season, breaking a tie with Tony Gonzalez and Jason Witten.

Last season, Lewis caught six passes — two for touchdowns — with the Green Bay Packers.

Considered a top blocking tight end, Lewis knows the roots of Chicago’s offensive plan from his time in Green Bay with Bears offensive coordinator Luke Getsy.

Aaron Rodgers – longtime Packers QB now with the New York Jets – has spoken highly of Lewis in days gone by.

“A guy like Marcedes Lewis is an important cog in the locker room wheel and the team’s momentum,” Rodgers said during an appearance on “The Pat McAfee Show” in January.

“That’s a man I want to end my career with. When I’m playing I want that guy next to me.’

Former Packers tight end Robert Tonyan, now also a member of the Bears, was Lewis’ teammate at Green Bay.

Lewis played in 251 career games (221 starts) with 432 catches for 5,084 yards and a career-high 39 touchdowns.
