Marc Cucurella has revealed that a Chelsea team-mate attempted to clear the air with Erling Haaland after the defender chanted abusive language towards the Manchester City striker.
After Cucurella was part of the Spanish team that won Euro 2024, he celebrated his goal with a song that mentioned the Manchester City striker. The song said Haaland “trembled” when he saw the Chelsea defender.
But it was the goalscorer who had the last laugh last month, when Haaland dribbled past his man to score his first goal of the season, helping Manchester City to a 2-0 win at Stamford Bridge.
Cucurella says the incident was “taken out of context,” but insisted he “would do it.” He then revealed that Cole Palmer was trying to make peace.
Speaking with EfeCucurella said: ‘A lot of attention has been paid to that [the song] and these things happen.

“I am very happy and I think that if someone sings a song with his name, it is because he is a top player or a world star. The name of an unknown player would not be used.
‘Everyone is happy because he scored and I’m still just as happy to have won the Euro. I would do it again, these things happen and that’s it.
‘Ultimately they took it a bit out of context in England and I don’t think he [Haaland] didn’t understand it either.
‘He read what they said and took it a little personally.
‘Nowadays people take things very personally, but back then they had a few awards and my colleague [Cole] Palmer asked him about me and that was it. It was just an anecdote.’
The entire chant, which Cucurella repeated, goes: ‘Cucu, Cucurella, he’s eating paella, Cucu, Cucurella, he’s drinking Estrella, Haaland you better shake, ’cause Cucurella’s coming’.
Attentive fans even noticed Haaland ignoring Cucurella when he suffered from cramp in the closing stages of Chelsea’s match against City.

When asked about Cucurella after the match, the Norwegian replied: ‘Well, Cucurella is a funny man.
‘Last season he asked for my shirt… and this summer he sings a song about me.’
However, the elder Haaland, Alfie, was convinced that his son had understood the spell correctly.
“I think it’s just a bit of fun,” Haaland Snr said of the chant Cucurella belted out at the top of his lungs during his team’s jubilant celebrations in Madrid.
“We think he’s a good player, and he’s a funny person. It’s just a bit of banter. I think Erling likes it.”
