Manuel Neuer’s boot ‘held his leg together’ after horrifying accident while skiing

Manuel Neuer’s ski injury could have been “much worse” had the emergency services not been on hand with a “rescue helicopter”, according to reports.

The 36-year-old, who went skiing in Italy after Germany missed out on the 2022 World Cup in Qatar, broke his tibia and fibula during the trip.

According to BILDthe ‘open fracture in his right leg resulted in severe bleeding at the scene of the accident’.

Neuer’s injury could have been ‘much worse’ if emergency services hadn’t been around

However, Neuer’s ski boot is said to have kept the wound closed while emergency services arrived.

This has been credited by BILD as vital to Neuer’s recovery, as the compression limited the amount of swelling around the injury.

Neuer’s surgery would have been postponed if the skin around the cut continued to expand, as doctors would not want to risk complications from the procedure.

The 36-year-old, who went skiing in Italy after Germany were knocked out of the 2022 World Cup in Qatar, broke his tibia and fibula during the trip.

Therefore, this could have affected the healing process in Neuer’s right leg and kept the goalkeeper out of action for longer than expected.

According to reportsdelayed surgery can cause “deep infection, prolonged hospitalization, and repeat surgery to join or rejoin the wound edges.”

However, the speed of the emergency services played an important role in preventing this from happening.

The 36-year-old Germany captain was lucky that the emergency services were on hand to attend to him quickly.

According to BILD, a rescue helicopter from the nearby accident clinic in Murnau was available at the time of the accident and rushed to his aid.

His speed in attending the scene meant that Neuer was able to go under the knife the same day and begin the recovery process.

Speaking after the incident, the Germany captain said it was not the best way to end the year.

The surgery is said to have gone well and doctors are confident that “no further complications are expected.”

However, Neuer will be out of action for an extended period of time and will continue his rehabilitation program at Bayern Munich.

As it stands, he is not allowed to “move his leg again until the end of February” at the earliest. March is said to be a more reasonable period of time.

For this reason, his girlfriend Anika Bissel will continue to take him to the training ground to visit the club’s medical staff.
