Diogo Dalot ‘is in advanced talks’ over a new deal to stay at Manchester United… with the Portuguese right-back ‘considering a new five-year contract’ at Old Trafford after impressing with Erik ten Hag

Barcelona’s hopes of signing Diogo Dalot appear to have ended with the Portuguese defender reportedly in advanced talks over a new five-year contract to remain at Manchester United.

Dalot confirmed last month that talks about a new contract were underway at Old Trafford.

Now Spanish outlet Sports world They report that these talks are at an ‘advanced’ stage and that the offer on the table is a five-year contract.

The Portuguese defender’s current contract was due to expire in the summer until United activated a 12-month extension before Christmas to keep him until June 2024.

Barcelona had made no secret of their desire to renew their wing-back options, but Dalot has impressed with Erik ten Hag and also loves the intensity of English football.

The right-back has excelled under new manager Erik ten Hag at Manchester United this season.

“We are in a position to say that we are negotiating and seeing how both parties will benefit, but it is no secret that I am happy to be here, so we will see how things go,” Dalot said last month.

I love this club and I love playing for this club. Progressively we are going in a good direction as a team.

“For me, this is the most important part and I hope that individually I can continue to help the team as I am doing.”

Dalot has made 23 appearances for United this season and returned to the bench against Crystal Palace after a hamstring injury.

With a £19m transfer from FC Porto in 2017, Dalot’s United career appeared to be in doubt after spending the 2020-21 season on loan at AC Milan, where he impressed.

But the 23-year-old turned it around and excelled under Erik ten Hag this season and says he loves the intensity and “messiness” of Premier League football.

He continued: “I agree that it’s probably the best league to play if you’re a player who likes excitement, if you’re a player who likes intensity, if you’re a player who likes disorder.”

Barcelona were reportedly looking forward to Dalot but it looks like they will miss out if Dalot stays.

‘This kind of busy schedule. If you have this kind of mentality I think it’s the best league to play.

‘But obviously we are not all the same. There are many players who would probably prefer to play in another league.

But, for me individually, having played in these three countries (England, Italy and Portugal), I would say that it is the league that I enjoy the most because I like this intensity of schedules.

‘The way the English live this game, the way everyone talks about the Premier League. It’s like the world stops at the weekend to watch it, and I think that made me love this country and obviously the Premier League.”

Dalot is pushing to be restored to the starting line-up for the midweek game against Leeds, who are without a manager after sacking Jesse Marsch on Monday.
