Manchester United turn to Lyon star Ousmane Dembele to solve Erik ten Hag’s search for new striker

Manchester United are eyeing a move for Lyon striker Moussa Dembele as they seek to solve their striker issues.

The Red Devils are considering a move for the Frenchman before the transfer window shuts and are in contact with the player’s representatives, according to Manchester Evening News. 

United have been linked with strikers Marko Arnautovic, Jamie Vardy and Alvaro Morata in the last week as manager Erik ten Hag seeks reinforcements to his forward line.

Ten Hag’s side have netted just one goal in their opening two Premier League defeats to Brentford and Brighton. 

Cristiano Ronaldo’s future at Old Trafford remains up in the air after he informed the club of his desire to leave earlier in the summer as they missed out on Champions League football.

The Red Devils bid £7.5million for Bologna striker Arnautovic last week but pulled the plug on the deal following huge backlash from United fans amid the former West Ham and Stoke’s potential signing.

Morata has also revealed that he is reluctant to leave Atletico Madrid this summer, while doubts remain over Leicester City’s willingness to allow star striker Jamie Vardy to join United.

As a result, United have turned their attention to Lyon striker Dembele, while Everton and Villarreal have also been linked with moves for the 26-year-old this window.

The forward has just one-year remaining on his contract at Lyon, with multiple European clubs on high alert ahead of a potential free transfer next summer. 

The Frenchman scored 22 goals in 36 appearances for Lyon last season, yet Les Gones failed to qualify for European football as they stuttered to an eight placed Ligue 1 finish.

Dembele has fallen down the pecking order at the Groupama Stadium following the arrival of former Arsenal striker Alexandre Lacazette.

The club are keen to avoid losing Dembele for free next summer and are willing to sell the striker if he does not agree a new deal at the club. 

That has caught the attention of United, who have been credited with interest in the Frenchman in previous transfer windows. 

The Red Devils host Liverpool at Old Trafford on Monday as both sides bid to claim their first Premier League victory of the season.
