Manchester United take a step closer to signing Inter Milan goalkeeper Andre Onana for £43m

Manchester United are one step closer to signing Inter Milan goalkeeper Andre Onana with a £43 million deal to be finalized next week

Manchester United have moved a step closer to signing Inter Milan goalkeeper Andre Onana following further talks between the two clubs.

It is clear that a deal in the region of £43 million will be completed next week. Onana discusses personal terms, but it is not expected that there will be any problems.

Erik ten Hag is keen to work with his former Ajax keeper again after deciding it was time to replace David de Gea as United’s number 1 after 12 years at Old Trafford.

Concerns over De Gea’s ball distribution and ability with the ball at his feet – which came to a head in last month’s FA Cup final defeat to Manchester City at Wembley – convinced Ten Hag to make a change this summer, too although the Spaniard had already agreed on the terms of a new contract.

De Gea’s £375,000 a week deal expired on June 30 and he is now a free agent. While United have indicated their intention to talk to him, it seems unlikely he will return to Old Trafford as Onana’s number 2.

The club have already extended Tom Heaton’s contract for a further 12 months to keep the veteran goalkeeper as backup for another season, while Onana’s arrival is likely to open the door for Dean Henderson to join Nottingham Forest in a permanent deal worth up to £20 million.

The Cameroon international will be United’s second signing this summer after Mason Mount moved from Chelsea to Old Trafford for £60 million.

United are also said to be planning a £50m move for Danish star Rasmus Hojlund as they look to sign a striker this summer.
