Bruno Fernandes has accused FIFA of ruining the World Cup celebration when he came out on the decision to host it mid-season in Qatar.

The Manchester United star claimed the timing and venue are ignoring the wishes of players and fans, and also expressed concerns about human rights issues hanging over the tournament which kicks off this week.

“Of course it’s strange,” said Fernandes, who will represent Portugal. “It’s not exactly the time when we want to play at the World Cup.

“For fans and players, children will be in school and people will be at work. The timing won’t be the best for the people watching games.

‘We know the environment around the tournament, what has been’ [said] in recent weeks and months about the people who died building the stadiums. We are not happy about that at all.

“We want football to be for everyone. Everyone has to be there, because it’s the World Cup.

Bruno Fernandes criticized FIFA’s decision to host a World Cup in Qatar mid-season

“Things like this shouldn’t happen at any time, but for a World Cup, which is a celebration for fans, players and something that is a joy, it has to be done in a better way.”

Fernandes’ team-mate and Danish international Christian Eriksen added: “I totally agree with Bruno.

Much has been written about the World Cup and why it is in Qatar. I think everyone would agree that it was not done the right way.

Jamie Redknapp agreed with players but insisted it’s now a matter of ‘making the best of it’

“However, we are footballers and those political decisions are made over us. Of course we say our thing to focus on it, but the change has to come from somewhere else.’

Sky Sports pundit Jamie Redknapp weighed in on the debate, saying: ‘We know it shouldn’t be there. Something should have happened when it was initially handed over to Qatar.

‘It’s too late now. The World Cup is about to start. I think it’s a matter of making the most of it. But it’s clearly not in the right environment.’
