Manchester United officials are set to travel to Barcelona in a last-ditch attempt to sign Frenkie de Jong, according to reports.

The Red Devils have grown frustrated in their pursuit of the Barca midfielder, yet transfer chiefs are convinced that they will be able to strike a deal.

United’s £70million signing of Casemiro reduced their need to sign a midfielder, however manager Erik ten Hag has expressed his desire for de Jong to join him at Old Trafford.

The pair enjoyed an extremely successful relationship together at Ajax as they reached the Champions League semi-finals in 2018-19.

Barcelona are keen to offload de Jong amid their well-documented financial issues, with the Spanish giants demanding that the Dutchman either reduces his salary or departs the Camp Nou.

The 25-year-old is already owed £17million in amortisations and back payments by the Blaugrana, with his future unlikely to be resolved until that matter is worked out.

The midfielder featured in Barca’s 4-1 victory over Real Sociedad on Sunday, but is viewed as dispensable due to their engine room depth.

The Red Devils had a reported deal in place with de Jong, however it expired as the two club’s were unable to reach an agreement.

Man United officials are now flying out to Catalonia in order to seal the transfer ahead of the transfer window closure in a few weeks, per Telegraaf.

The Red Devils’ much-maligned midfield issues have been clear for all to see in their opening Premier League defeats to Brentford and Brighton.

Premier League rivals Chelsea were confident that they will be able to strike a deal with de Jong under the noses of the Red Devils, but their interest appears to have cooled.

The Blues are able to offer the 25-year-old Champions League football this season, while ten Hag’s outfit will only be competing in the Europa League.

Therefore, it remains to be seen whether officials will be able to convince de Jong to reunite with his former manager at Old Trafford.
