Manchester United are set to reveal Rasmus Hojlund ahead of their friendly against Lens on Saturday, after he passed his medical and agreed a five-year contract.

Erik ten Hag’s side are playing their penultimate friendly of the pre-season campaign at Old Trafford, and fans will be treated to the sight of the latest £72 million signing just days after Hojlund put pen to paper.

The Danish prodigy joins the Atalanta Red Devils as their priority signing after first securing the services of Mason Mount and Andre Onana earlier in the window.

The Serie A side were unwilling to let go of the 20-year-old talent, and United’s deal was nearly hijacked in the end by Paris Saint-Germain, but the club’s new striker – who emerged as the first choice in the position after Harry Kane and Victor Osimhen’s exorbitant fees have ruled them out – will come to bolster the side’s offensive ranks ahead of the start of the season.

After passing his medical, Hojlund will sign a super contract that will keep him at the club until at least 2028, with the option of a further year to extend the deal.

In preparation for his move, the striker missed Atalanta’s two pre-season clashes and will need to regain fitness before starting the Premier League.

But Ten Hag will hope no time is wasted in letting Hojlund shoot for his side as United try to solve their striker problem.

Last season’s emergency signing of Wout Weghorst on loan from Besiktas did not pay off, with Marcus Rashford forced to take up the deficit in front of goal.

While the England star enjoyed a blistering 30-goal season, Rashford’s Dutch manager will be keen to add more attacking firepower as Man United prepare to battle for silverware in both domestic competitions and the Champions League.

Club legend Rio Ferdinand was particularly positive about his team’s conquest of Hojlund.

“I see it a bit like Darwin Nunez at Liverpool. Last season was his right season,” said Ferdinand. “He’s a young striker coming into the league, everything about him suits the Premier League perfectly, but it didn’t go as well as he would have liked.

“But I think we will see a different player for Liverpool this season.

I wouldn’t be surprised if that happens to Hojlund, although of course I would like him to have a better season. He may do, but it will take time to adjust.’

Hojlund spent just one season with Atalanta before securing the blockbuster move to England’s top flight, and just half a season with Sturm Graz before that.

Before moving abroad in January 2022, the striker went through the youth system in Copenhagen.
