Weghorst has scored ten goals in 20 appearances for club and country this season, including one against Kasimpasa on Saturday, and waved to fans as if saying goodbye after his goal.

United were eyeing Cody Gakpo as a replacement for Cristiano Ronaldo and didn’t sign him

Weghorst may not fit the fans’ ideal of a new striker, however he would certainly give United a different attacking dimension to what they already have.

He was not happy with his levels in the Premier League last season and is keen to give it another chance, especially if talks continue to progress with United.

Before moving to Turf Moor, he had an impressive goal ratio of almost one in two games. He played 144 games for Wolfsburg and scored 77 goals.

They could now look to Burnley’s Weghorst as an immediate replacement for the centre-forward.

United have to be resourceful in this window as their owners look to sell the club.

The Glazers’ stance on financing meant they were unable to bid for Cody Gakpo, who moved to Liverpool from PSV Eindhoven. They want another striker option after shortening Cristiano Ronaldo’s contract last month.
