Manchester United have been fined £65,000 by the FA after their players surrounded referee Chris Kavanagh during their FA Cup tie against Fulham last month
Manchester United have been fined £65,000 for surrounding the referee during last month’s FA Cup tie with Fulham.
United have admitted ‘failing to ensure that players behave in an orderly manner’.
It comes after a second-half incident in which United players protested to referee Chris Kavanagh over a Willian handball in the penalty area.
The penalty was eventually given, resulting in red cards for Willian and Fulham boss Marco Silva for their outrage at the decision, which was made after a VAR check.
Alexsandar Mitrovic was also later sent off and given an eight match suspension after shoving Kavanagh.
There were no penalties for United players at the time, but the FA has now decided to penalize the club.
a statement issued by the FA read on Thursday: ‘Manchester United FC have been fined £65,000 after its players surrounded a match official during the 71st minute of their FA Cup draw against Fulham FC on Sunday 19 March 2023.
The club admitted that it failed to ensure that its players behaved in an orderly manner and did not behave inappropriately.
“Manchester United FC’s fine was imposed by an independent regulatory commission following a subsequent hearing.”
United were 1–0 down at the time of the incident, but the Cottagers fell apart after two players were sent off, eventually losing 3–1 after two goals from Bruno Fernandes and one from Marcel Sabitzer.
Erik ten Hag’s side will next play against Brighton in the semi-final on April 23, while Man City will face Sheffield United in the other final four a day earlier.
