Manchester United fans hail ‘generational talent’ Kobbie Mainoo’s superb strike against Liverpool as comparisons are made to Federico Macheda’s goal against Aston Villa in 2009

Manchester United fans were full of praise for Kobbie Mainoo after his excellent goal against Liverpool.

Liverpool had taken the lead at Old Trafford through Luis Diaz, but Bruno Fernandes equalized before Mainoo’s superb effort put United ahead.

Although Liverpool later drew 2-2 thanks to Mohamed Salah’s penalty, much was made of Mainoo’s goal, with the 18-year-old enjoying an excellent breakthrough season.

Comparisons were made with Federico Macheda’s memorable goal for United against Aston Villa 15 years ago this week, when the then 17-year-old scored what proved to be a crucial goal in the title race.

Mainoo’s goal was very similar in style to Macheda’s, with the midfielder finding the net for the third time.

Journalist Mark Ogden wrote about X: ‘Mainoo does a Macheda there, 15 years after the original’.

Meanwhile, one United fan wrote: ‘Mainoo is a world class man’.

Furthermore, another supporter described Mainoo’s goal as ‘incredible’. They wrote: ‘KOBBIE MAINOO YOU BEAUTY. WHAT A GOAL!!! MAINOO THAT’S INCREDIBLE’.

One user said Mainoo, who recently made his England debut, is a “generational talent.” They wrote: ‘England have found real generational talent, this one isn’t going to flop.

‘His name is KOBBIE MAINOO, what a player!!! What a goal!!’.

Journalist Richard Amofa also compared Mainoo’s goal to Macheda’s effort.

He wrote: ‘April 5, 2009: Macheda for Man Utd vs Aston Villa April 7, 2024: Mainoo for United vs Liverpool’ and posted similar images for both goals.
