Manchester United stars Scott McTominay and Anthony Elanga received scathing criticism after their lackluster performances against Charlton on Tuesday night, with fans calling for them to be moved on the transfer market.

United may have brushed aside League One opposition 3-0 in the Carabao Cup tie at Old Trafford, but supporters were clearly displeased with the efforts of both McTominay and Elanga, who were deployed in the lead.

The Swede led a young United attacking unit against the Addicks with Erik ten Hag seizing the opportunity to make several changes to the squad that beat Everton 3-1 on Friday, with captain Harry Maguire even making an unusual start.

But fans were quick to take to Twitter to let it be known that they expected a lot more from the 20-year-old, who replaced Anthony Martial at number 9.

One fan claimed that Elanga’s performances have only gotten worse since he was introduced to the first team, writing: ‘Elanga has no future at United. He has regressed since he made the first XI. He offers nothing.

Another believed the pairing had Championship quality, adding: “McTominay and Elanga should sign for Stoke, they are both horrible footballers.”

Scottish midfielder Scott McTominay came under fire after having the worst passing success rate of his team.

But a third argued that the pair would struggle even in League One, stating: ‘Do McTominay and Elanga look awful and below league one standard against a league one team? Who would have guessed?

Striker Elanga appeared to struggle for the Red Devils at times against the League One side, failing to register a single shot on target or complete a dribble, failing to make any crosses and being caught offside on one occasion.

And McTominay didn’t fare much better, with no interceptions, blocks or clearances from defensive midfield, and he finished the game with his team’s lowest completion rate (80.7%).

Man United are eager to hang on to McTominay to retain the force in depth in midfield.

To one fan, the display against the Addicks was enough to prove they were no longer required by the club, despite previous reports that the club would hold on to McTominay to retain strength at depth.

They wrote: ‘Elanga and McTominay have to find a new club this summer, sorry but it’s the truth!’

And one supporter claimed Tuesday’s opposition could provide a good option for the Scottish midfielder, saying: ‘Elanga needs to go. He is terrifying. McTominay would fit very well in Charlton’s midfield.
