Manchester United ‘face competition in their bid to sign Timo Werner as another Premier League club joins race for ex-Chelsea star’ as Erik ten Hag looks to the January window in a bid to address his side’s lack of goals

  • The German striker could leave Leipzig on loan in January after falling out of favour

Manchester United are reportedly not alone in pursuing a loan deal for former Chelsea striker Timo Werner in January.

Werner won the Champions League in his first season at Chelsea but struggled to replicate the goalscoring form that had made him so highly rated in his native Germany before finding himself in the Premier League.

After two years at Stamford Bridge, Werner returned to the Bundesliga with RB Leipzig in 2022 and won the DFB-Pokal in his first season back with Marco Rose's team.

This year, however, Werner has found his opportunities limited at the Red Bull Arena, with Rose preferring Belgian international Lois Openda, and the club are believed to be willing to let him leave on loan in January.

United have long been linked with a move for the Germany international, with reports from the country last month claiming that the club had made inquiries with Leipzig about a possible loan for the 27-year-old.

According to a report from The sun Aston Villa are also interested in signing Werner in the summer, with Unai Emery keen to strengthen the club's attacking options.

Villa have revived under Emery this season and are currently level on points with league leaders Arsenal, who have suffered just three defeats so far this season.

Meanwhile, Ten Hag's team is crying out for new attacking talent in January, while the club continues to struggle in front of goal in the Premier League.

United have scored just 18 goals from their opening 17 games, with only relegation-threatened Burnley, Sheffield United, Luton and Nottingham Forest scoring fewer in the league.

£72m summer signing Rasmus Hojlund is still searching for his first Premier League goal after 13 appearances, while Marcus Rashford has so far failed to recapture his goalscoring form from last season.
