Manchester United are closing in on the signing of Real Madrid forward Marco Asensio, according to a report.

United are looking to improve their side late on in the transfer window as Erik ten Hag continues to overhaul the playing squad at Old Trafford, with the Dutchman looking to add several more new faces to his team before the window closes next week.

According to Relevo via Football Espana, Madrid manager Carlo Ancelotti has made it clear that Asensio has told the European champions that he is looking to leave the club amid interest from several English and Italian clubs, with United leading the way for the 26-year-old’s signature.

United have signed four players so far this transfer window, headlined by Brazilian Casemiro, who joined the club in a £70million deal from Madrid last week.

Asensio is now looking to follow his former team-mate out the door in the search for first-team minutes, and Old Trafford could be a possible destination.

‘Marco is looking at things to see if he can leave,’ said Ancelotti, who won UEFA men’s coach of the year yesterday.

‘If he doesn’t leave, he will 100% be a Madrid player.’

Asensio has just one year remaining on his current contract, and Madrid could be willing to cash in now rather than risk losing him for free next summer.

Asensio has scored 49 goals in 236 appearances for Madrid, winning five Champions Leagues

He’s made 236 appearances for the club since joining from Mallorca in 2014, scoring 49 goals and winning five Champions League titles.

He’s struggled for minutes recently at the Bernabeu however, and is aiming to kick on in his career, with several options of where to do that.

United have been searching for a forward all window, with the club recently stepping up their interest in Ajax star Antony, having been linked with the likes of Hakim Ziyech, Christian Pulisic, Memphis Depay and Cody Gakpo.

They could still add more than one to their ranks with Antony their main priority, and Asensio too could walk through the doors next week, with the Red Devils reportedly willing to pay up to £25.3million for him.
