  • Marcus Rashford has been in impressive form for Manchester United this term

Manchester United and Marcus Rashford are reportedly continuing discussions over a new contract with the club which it is said is confident will bind the player to new terms.

Rashford, 25, has experienced a renaissance in form this season leading Erik ten Hag’s revolution at the club. The England international has scored 16 goals in all competitions, including decisive finals against Liverpool, Arsenal and Manchester City in the Premier League.

However the Manchester evening news Y Sun now reports that the club are eager to reward his impressive return to form.

Marcus Rashford has experienced a form renaissance this term under Erik ten Hag

Having seen a dramatic drop in form over the past few seasons, due to a number of factors including injury and reported problems in his personal life, Rashford has reignited his United career this season. It had been thought that with only one year on his contract last summer he could end up leaving the club.

Erik ten Hag has tried to introduce a salary cap at the club to avoid the problems that have plagued the club in recent years related to jealousy in the dressing room over wages, as exclusively revealed by Sportsmail this month.

Known as the ‘Ronaldo Rule’, the club will no longer pay northern superstars £200,000 a week to avoid breaking their team’s salary structure. The ongoing negotiations with David De Gea have made the new rules in force clear to the goalkeeper.

It’s not exactly clear how this will affect the negotiations with Rashford, but with the forward proving his importance to the Dutch manager’s team again this season, he has a strong hand in the negotiations.

The striker has experienced difficulties in recent years, but looks back on his prime this season.

He has established himself as one of the leaders on Coach Ten Hag’s team this season.

As well as having regained his place among United’s greatest players, the World Cup also saw him reassert his position among Gareth Southgate’s most valued English players. Having been a doubt to even make the team last autumn, he started in one of the group stage matches and scored three times in total as England reached the quarter-finals.

Having struggled with Ole Gunnar Solskjaer in his waning days and Ralf Rangnick of late, Rashford has bounced back this season to re-establish himself as one of the club’s standout players.

With Paris Saint-Germain on the rounds as they seek a shakeup of their attacking line with Neymar and Lionel Messi both from the wrong side of 30, United have been keen to get Rashford to sign new terms.

The report states that no deal is imminent with a number of unresolved issues, but that the club are unfazed by their situation with the feeling that both parties want the same thing.

The decisive appearances in goals against the likes of Liverpool and Manchester City have helped him return to the top of his game.

Rashford’s contract was due to expire the following summer, but the club activated an option in his contract to extend it for a further 12 months.

His goals this season have been decisive in the rise of Ten Hag’s men, recovering from a diabolical start to the season in which Rashford was seen as guilty as any player of the poor results.

However, he has since become one of Ten Hag’s most trusted lieutenants, with his leadership on the pitch evident both in his play and in the way he converses with his teammates.

He seems to have regained some of that speed and explosiveness that defined his early years.

Amidst his impressive form, he has also equaled a record that has stood for 64 years, becoming the first United player since Dennis Viollet in 1959 to score in nine successive Old Trafford games.

The player himself has praised the changes hailed by the arrival of Ten Hag and his rapid impact on all aspects of the club.

“It’s a completely different mentality to last season, a different team playing different football,” Rashford said after the win over Nottingham Forest over the festive period.

“For me, when you’re not in the team and you come in, there’s a different mentality and you have to think about making an impact and you’re not sure when you’ll have another chance or another goal. But I’m enjoying what I’m doing right now.’
