Manchester City have launched an ambitious project to produce fictional television programs and are already working on children’s programmes.

The Premier League champions routinely produce in-house documentaries, from season reviews to focused pieces on individual players – with ‘Together’, the latest feature to win four consecutive titles, released this week.

But after teaming up with Sony Pictures Television, City chief executive Ferran Soriano wants them to go beyond that mandate and venture into surprising areas.

These include animated non-fiction programs designed to attract new and younger audiences.

“We have a lot of ideas that we’re developing,” Soriano said. ‘They are not up in the air, we are working on various fictional TV shows. We’re working on shows for kids and we have a list of projects we’re excited about.”

City hasn’t revealed which streaming platforms they’re targeting, although Sony has an entertainment app on their PlayStation models.

“When we make these documentaries, we’re not competing with anyone, we’re the only one who has these incredible images [City Studios] team shots,” Soriano added. “When we make fictional TV or shows, we’re competing with everyone with Netflix, Amazon or whoever.

“We believe we have the creativity and insights into football to create fictional stories. I hope you’ll see some of these on your screens in the years to come. I can say that the pipeline of projects is large and the ideas are very exciting.’
