An Illinois man is facing two counts of gun misdemeanor after accidentally shooting himself in his sleep while dreaming about a home invasion.
Mark Dicara, 62, mistakenly believed a burglar broke into his home after falling asleep on the night of April 10.
Dreaming that he was fighting off a criminal, he grabbed his .357 Magnum revolver and fired a shot into the darkness, only to wake up after accidentally shooting himself in the leg.
Dicara was rushed to the hospital when police discovered he was losing a “significant amount of blood,” and investigators would later discover that he used the revolver without a state-mandated firearms owner identification card.

An investigation into the shooting revealed that when Dicara fired the gun, the bullet passed through his leg before landing in his bedding.
After deputies found Dicara gushing blood from the wound, they put a tourniquet on his conduit and sent him to a local hospital for treatment.
No one else was injured, and authorities quickly determined that no home invasion had ever occurred.
It was concluded that Dicara had violated the Illinois state’s firearms law, as he previously held an ID card, but it had been revoked.
Officials have not confirmed why his license was revoked, or when it happened.
According to his LinkedIn profile, Dicara is a semi-retired attorney licensed to practice law in Illinois and Wisconsin.

Following his arrest, the Lake County Attorney announced it would prosecute Dicara for possession of a firearm without a valid FOID card.
He was also charged with firing a firearm recklessly due to his unconscious shot. The charges are considered class 3 and class 4 felonies, respectively.
Dicara will appear in court on June 29 after posting $150,000 bail.
