Man wearing a ‘clown mask’ near play park is arrested on suspicion of sexually assaulting a child

A man wearing a ‘clown mask’ near a play park has been arrested on suspicion of sexually abusing a child.

Police were called to the park in Crediton, Devon, at around 12.40pm yesterday after reports of a man believed to be under the influence of alcohol in the area and wearing a clown-like mask.

Officers received another report that the man was approaching children, causing fear and allegedly touching a child inappropriately in the park near Belle Parade and Church Street.

Inspector Ollie Heaton said: “A man in his 40s was arrested this afternoon on suspicion of committing a sexual assault on a child, which took place near Newcombes Play Park in Crediton.

“The man remains in police custody as investigations continue.

‘This incident is believed to have occurred between approximately 12pm and 12.40pm today and we are appealing to anyone who witnessed this incident or has information about it to contact us as soon as possible.

‘Information we would like to view also includes dashcam, doorbell or other camera footage.

‘It is believed that a number of people, including parents with children, were in the park at the time and we are very keen to speak to anyone who was present to ensure we have captured all relevant evidence and witness statements. ‘

Inspector Heaton added: “I appreciate that reported incidents such as this will cause concern within the community, and I would like to reassure the public that we are diligently pursuing all evidence to deal with the report vigorously and thoroughly. At this time we are not looking for anyone else in connection with this incident.”
