Man Utd’s Andre Onana defends team-mate Alejandro Garnacho over social media post
Andre Onana has defended Manchester United teammate Alejandro Garnacho after a controversial social media post.
Garnacho posted a celebratory photo featuring Onana and other teammates after the goalkeeper’s late penalty save in their 1-0 win over FC Copenhagen on Tuesday evening.
The message, which has been deleted, contained emojis that could be considered offensive.
The FA is aware of the social media post and has requested Garnacho’s comments on the matter through Manchester United.
Onana wrote on Instagram on Thursday to defend the midfielder: “People cannot choose what should offend me. I know exactly what (Garnacho) meant: power and strength.
“This matter cannot be allowed to go any further.”
Manchester United referred Sky Sports News to Onana’s post when asked for comment.
In 2020, former Manchester United striker Edinson Cavani was suspended for three matches and fined £100,000 when he posted a comment thanking a fan, which included a racially offensive term.
A year earlier, Manchester City’s Bernardo Silva was fined £50,000 and given a one-match ban after a tweet compared the facial features of a Spanish confectionery company’s mascot to those of Benjamin Mendy. Silva had received support from Mendy during the FA process.
