Man Utd: Ian Wright backs ‘top draw’ Jadon Sancho to begin justifying £73m price tag next season

Ian Wright backs Jadon Sancho to start justifying his £73million price tag at Man United next season as he credits Erik ten Hag for sending him to the Netherlands mid-season for ‘physical and mental recuperation’

  • Sancho ended his season on a high by scoring in United’s 2–1 win over Fulham
  • Now Wright expects the 23-year restart and next term to be more consistent
  • He believes Sancho can show his quality with the right players around him

According to Ian Wright, Jadon Sancho will kick off and show his top draw skills more often for Manchester United next season.

Sancho ended his campaign on a high by opening the scoring in United’s final 2-1 win over Fulham at Old Trafford on Sunday afternoon.

His shot helped Erik ten Hag’s men finish third in the Premier League, putting Champions League football on the line again next season.

It has been a roller coaster of an individual season for Sancho, whose United future looked bleak when Ten Hag sent him to the Netherlands to train alone amid concerns over his physical and mental readiness to play for the club late last year.

However, since his return in January, the 23-year-old has shown an improved performance as he registered four goals and two assists in the league.

Jadon Sancho will kick off at Man United with the right players around him, says Ian Wright

Ten Hag will be hoping for a more consistent all-round season from Sancho in 2023/24, and Wright backs United’s £73 million signing to do just that with the right players around him.

The Arsenal legend said of Sancho on Match of the Day: “The potential Ten Hag knows he has, he recognized he needed a little break and sent him to the Netherlands for a bit of physical and mental recovery.”

“But we know this man’s capabilities and what he is capable of in terms of his abilities and skills. Once he has that main focus like he had with Dortmund [Marco] Giant and people like that, he’ll do his thing because we’re talking about someone who is definitely top notch in terms of ability.

“He’s had six goals and three assists this season and I’m sure they want more from him with the money they paid for him. We’ll have a lot more players to play off and I’m sure we’ll get a lot more from him. Jadon Sancho will see.

“It’s brilliant, I’m happy for him. I am happy for Ten Hag. At Man United you only see good things happening.’

Sancho completed his big-money move to United in 2021, but has yet to truly justify his £73 million price tag, netting just five goals and three assists in his debut season.

Erik ten Hag has benefited from sending the player to the Netherlands halfway through the season

Nevertheless, the winger improved on that return this season and Ten Hag is happy with the progress he has made.

After their 4-1 win over Chelsea on Thursday, the United boss said of Sancho: “He did very well on the right. Played a very good game today. He is one of the players who has progressed this season. That is a good basis to build on.

‘He can do both. He prefers to play on the left, but we saw today that he is also very good on the right.’
