Man United suffered an early blow ahead of their crucial Champions League match against Galatasaray after their Under 19 side lost 1-0 in the corresponding UEFA Youth League match.

Baran Demiroglu’s goal was enough for the Turkish giants to beat United in a match played in heavy rain, with biblical showers battering Istanbul this evening.

The UEFA Youth League is an under-19 competition for the youth academies of the Champions League, with United’s youngsters also in a group with Bayern Munich and FC Copenhagen.

Several Red Devils starlets featured in the match at the Recep Tayyip Erdoğan Stadium, including goalkeeper Elyh Harrison and Jack Fletcher, son of former United midfielder and current technical director Darren.

Despite the Biblical circumstances, Mailsport understands that there are no suggestions that tonight’s match between the senior teams will be cancelled.

The defeat in difficult circumstances leaves United Under 19s – coached by Travis Binnion – bottom of the group with just four points from five games.

Copenhagen is the surprising leader with ten points, while Bayern and Galatasaray each have six points.

Attention now turns to tonight, with United’s seniors also finding themselves in a difficult position in their group.

Three disastrous defeats have left them in last place, one point behind Galatasaray and FC Copenhagen.

They need to win in Turkey to keep their hopes of qualification in their own hands.

A draw wouldn’t eliminate them, but it would make them rely on other results on the final matchday and they would also have to beat Bayern.

If they lose to the Turkish giants, they are out. Even if they won both games and Copenhagen beat Bayern and Galatasaray, they would be eliminated in the same manner.
