Borussia Dortmund reportedly want to sign Jadon Sancho permanently, but Manchester United’s transfer demands could pose a problem.

The 24-year-old returned to Germany on loan in January after being banned from United’s first team following a high-profile dispute with manager Erik ten Hag.

Dortmund previously approved Sancho’s move to Old Trafford three years ago in a £73million transfer but are now looking to seal his permanent move back to BVB.

However, according to Sky Sports Germany, the Red Devils want at least £40m for the winger, who has failed to live up to expectations in England.

Dortmund are reluctant to spend €40 million on Sancho, but they have not given up hope of signing the 24-year-old for a cut price.

Sancho’s existing contract at Manchester expires in 2026 and the winger is keen to leave the club after a worst spell in his career, which also coincided with him being dropped from the England squad.

He scored his first goal since returning to Dortmund in the 2-1 Bundesliga win over Werder Bremen last weekend and the club are now exploring how to secure Sancho’s return for next season.

The club is a shrewd operator in the transfer market, often recruiting cheaply, improving players and then selling them on for huge profits, but United are unlikely to lower the asking price to meet Dortmund’s demands.

When Manchester United initially chased Sancho’s signature, they were consistently rejected by the German giants before agreeing to pay almost £80 million for the troublesome winger.

The England side have lowered their asking price and will certainly make a certain loss on Sancho if he leaves, but Dortmund have ‘secret plans’ to reduce his fee even further.

One option being explored by the German giants is to request that Sancho be sent back to the club on another season-long loan in Germany before they attempt to complete a later signing.

The Bundesliga giants are also considering signing Sancho in a player-plus-cash deal for talented striker Donyell Malen, who has been linked with a move to Manchester United.
