Manchester United target Jean Clair-Todibo furiously clashed with his own supporters on Friday evening after Nice suffered a narrow defeat to Montpellier.

The fifth-placed Ligue 1 team remain three points clear of the European places in the competition after missing the chance to move up to third following their 2-1 defeat.

Todibo was at fault for Montpellier’s opening goal after turning the ball into his own net and emotions flared at full-time when he collided with Nice’s ultras in the Allianz Riviera.

The France international has been consistently linked with a move to Old Trafford in the summer, with Nice owner Sir Jim Ratcliffe a new investor in United. Angry fans told him to leave the club.

The kind supporters were able to vent their frustrations full-time by singing a song telling the 24-year-old: ‘If you’re not happy, leave the club.’

The player who is touted for a move to both United and Chelsea previously hinted at a possible exit, saying in February: ‘I will wait until the summer to make my decision. If I decide to stay, I will announce it, if I want to leave, I will announce that too and I will thank everyone, but we are not there yet.”

Todibo responded by initially charging towards the group of fans protected behind a metal fence and engaging in a shouting match with the aggravated fanbase.

The conversation lasted more than a minute as the defender pointed at individuals in the crowd, argued with his teammates and expressed his anger.

Nice players, including former Champions League winner Dante, tried to stop him but were rebuffed by Todibo as he continued to move away from them.

Fans in the stands refused to settle after being confronted by some members who jumped down onto the lower concrete level and tried to get closer to the player.

Todibo was tipped for a possible move to the English top flight last year and a move to Man United could now be easier to execute given Ratcliffe’s recent investment in the English giants.

The 24-year-old is enjoying his strongest season in France since moving to the club from Barcelona three years ago and has produced impressive defensive performances to help the club keep 12 clean sheets in the league this season.
