Manchester United Supporters’ Trust have released a rare post-game statement after Erik ten Hag’s team suffered a humiliating 4-0 defeat against Brentford on Saturday.

In a statement posted on their website, MUST called the club’s loss at Brentford a ‘humiliation’:

‘What we have witnessed tonight is an embarrassment – no, a humiliation – for Manchester United fans.

‘And yet in many ways it was not a surprise. It feels like the culmination of a long-term direction of travel.

Manchester United Supports Trust released a statement following the 4-0 loss at Brentford

Despite Ten Hag’s team failing to find their feet thus far this season following back-to-back Premier League losses, the Trust directed the blame for the club’s decline squarely at the presiding Glazer family.

‘MUST hold the owners of the Club primarily responsible for this new low in our decade of decline. Sir Alex papered over the cracks, but since 2013 the consequences of our owners has been plain to see.’

The group was initially founded in 1998 to protest against Ruport Mudoch’s planned takeover of the club, has since grown into the largest group of its kind in the UK.

The statement condemned the Glazer family for their role in the club’s ‘decade of decline’

MUST advocate for United fans to have a greater democratic involvement in running the club

In the years following the Glazer family’s purchase of United in 2005, MUST has turned its attention to seeking a more democratic model of fan involvement in the running of the club, advocating for United to adopt the 50+1 model seen in the Bundesliga where clubs are required to retain at least 50% plus one share of their voting rights.

In their statement, MUST further demanded ‘urgent and radical’ changes to take place at the club:

‘On behalf of Manchester United fans everywhere, we demand urgent and radical change. And we as fans – all of us – need to stick together. Fans unity, with one voice aimed at the owners and the club, is needed more than ever right now.’

FULL STATEMENT BY THE MANCHESTER UNITED SUPPORTERS’ TRUST

We don’t normally comment on matches but extraordinary times call for a different approach…

What we have witnessed tonight is an embarrassment – no, a humiliation – for Manchester United fans. And yet in many ways it was not a surprise. It feels like the culmination of a long-term direction of travel.

MUST hold the owners of the Club primarily responsible for this new low in our decade of decline. Sir Alex papered over the cracks, but since 2013 the consequences of our owners has been plain to see.

On behalf of Manchester United fans everywhere, we demand urgent and radical change. And we as fans – all of us – need to stick together. Fans unity, with one voice aimed at the owners and the club, is needed more than ever right now.

Finally, as the fans in the ground today showed, we will always support the shirts. Support the team, and defend the club. Our flag is deepest red, and we will never die.
