Manchester United’s injury problems continue to mount as they have confirmed Casemiro will be out of action for a number of weeks.

The influential Brazilian midfielder suffered a hamstring injury during United’s 3-0 Carabao Cup defeat to Newcastle on Wednesday evening.

The problem saw him withdrawn from the match at Old Trafford at half-time, and United fans held their breath as they hoped for positive news from his subsequent assessment.

However, United have revealed a strain will keep him out for ‘several weeks’.

It is the latest blow for Erik ten Hag, with the pressure increasing on the Dutchman, whose team has lost eight of the first fifteen games this season.

However, this is not expected to delay the investment as Ratcliffe is expected to hand over the majority of the money to the club before the end of the year.

Ten Hag had already largely ruled out the 31-year-old for this weekend’s clash with Fulham when he spoke after the loss to Newcastle.

He told reporters: ‘Just before half-time he picked up an injury. That’s why we had to take him away.’

When asked whether the midfielder should be excluded until the international break in mid-November, he answers: ‘I cannot answer that (right now).

“We have to wait 24 hours, but I’m sure he’ll be gone before Saturday.”

Casemiro’s absence comes at a delicate time for United, with pressure mounting on Ten Hag after a dismal start to the season and a difficult run of fixtures ahead.

After the away trip to Fulham, United travel to Copenhagen for a crucial Champions League match, followed by a home game against Luton.

After the international break, Ten Hag’s men are scheduled for trips to Everton, Galatasaray and Newcastle in a week.

Casemiro was a standout player in his first season at Old Trafford following his £70 million move from Real Madrid, scoring in the Carabao Cup final against Newcastle.

The 31-year-old has failed to replicate the form this season and has regressed along with the rest of the team.

Despite his dip in form, he is still remarkably their top scorer this season with four goals in all competitions.
