Manchester United have stepped up work on their stadium plans and released more information about what a renovated Old Trafford would look like.
As previously reported, new investor Sir Jim Ratcliffe and his INEOS group are considering two proposals. The preferred option is to build a state-of-the-art new stadium on a plot of land next to United’s historic home ground. However, a large-scale regeneration of Old Trafford, which would initially be a cheaper project, is also being considered.
And should officials decide to go that route, fans could expect a ‘new, world-class’ South Stand and renovation work to all three of Theater of Dreams’ other stands. The South Stand, known as the Sir Bobby Charlton, is the oldest structure on the ground. United has often explored the expansion, but has been hampered by the adjacent rail line. Technological advances mean that logistics are no longer the major problem they once were. A new stand would likely have multiple levels instead of one and be a similar height to the other three stands at Old Trafford. Such a move could provide a major boost to capacity, which is currently around 74,000, with a figure of 90,000 considered realistic.
The renovation would also focus on increasing the capacity and level of United’s corporate hospitality offering. Chief operating officer Collette Roche said: ‘The first option is to redevelop the current stadium. are mainly focusing on the construction of a new world-class South Stand, as well as the renovation of the other three stands.’
She added: ‘The alternative would be to build a new stadium on our footprint, which could significantly increase capacity and deliver a world-leading stadium and experience for the fans, team and other stakeholders.’
