Manchester United have returned to training less than 24 hours after their 2-1 triumph against bitter rivals Liverpool on Monday.

Erik ten Hag’s Red Devils squad were hard at work preparing for their next Premier League clash against Southampton at St Mary’s on Saturday.

Despite kick-starting Ten Hag’s reign as manager with two disappointing defeats to Brighton and Brentford, Man United put in a scintillating performance at Old Trafford on Monday, carving out an impressive victory against Jurgen Klopp’s side.

Eager to build on positives and recapture the energy displayed against Liverpool,  Red Devils coach Steve McClaren led Tuesday’s training session in the presence of assistant manager Mitchell van der Gaag, as Ten Hag presumably took a back seat.

Ex-Man United goalkeeper Raimond van der Gouw was invited to attend the training session, having travelled to Old Trafford to witness the 2-1 victory on Monday.

On a glorious night for United fans, Jadon Sancho kept his composure in the box to fire Ten Hag’s side ahead in the 16th minute before fellow England star Marcus Rashford buried his chance early in the second-half to extend the lead to two.

Although Liverpool rallied for an equaliser after Mohamed Salah reduced the deficit to one in the 81st minute, the Red Devils managed to hold on and secure their first win of the season in front of jubilant home support.

The win climbed Ten Hag’s side to 14th in the league as Liverpool slipped to 16th, already five points behind champions Manchester City.

Southampton have taken four points from their opening three games of the season and head into the clash with United in winning form, having beaten Leicester 2-1 on Saturday.
